Four teachers from the US and Canada prioritize student health with iCloth's Tech Cleaning Kit.

Building Healthy Tech Habits in Students: How Four K–12 Teachers Successfully Approached Classroom Tech Cleaning with iCloth

Lori Dupree, Keke Powell, Jodi Johnson, and Fiona Nanson are four problem-solving-oriented teachers from the US and Canada who actively searched for a convenient and easy-to-use device cleaning solution for their students to instill healthy technology habits.

iCloth helped by providing them with a year’s supply of tech cleaning wipes and a kit of didactic materials to implement the brand's initiative: Wipe-It-Wednesday Tech Cleaning Routine for Schools.

The Challenges in the Classroom

The four teachers identified shared specific challenges related to the maintenance of their classroom technology:

  • wiw case challenge

Students were neglectful when it came to taking care of their classroom devices, treating them as disposable items.

  • wiw case challenge

Teachers often felt demoralized when they had to assist their students with specific tasks on their devices that were in a gross and sticky condition.

  • wiw case challenge

Device cleaning wasn't performed regularly, resulting in a buildup of dirt on the devices, which posed a risk of hindering the essential functioning of their components at any time.

  • wiw case challenge

Teachers desired to eliminate the guesswork and mental burden associated with conventional cleaning solutions, such as estimating the appropriate amount of spray to use and the management and washing of microfiber cloths.

The great thing about implement ing the WIW routine is that it has made us much more aware of properly maintaining the tech.

We've also experienced fewer issues with touch screens failing in grade 1and grade 2.

Wipe-It-Wednesdays became a regular part of the students' and school staff's vocabulary. It became such an integral aspect of the class that first graders would be like, "I gotta clean my iPad first, where's my iCloth?"

  • Excited 4th grade students holding wipes, eagerly experiencing them during Wednesday sessions.

    Lori

Lots of 4thgrade kids in my school got to use the wipes and experi ence them and so whenever their day fell on a Wednesday they were really excited about it.

I think kids have realised how im portant it is to keep their comput ers clean, just to keep them func tioning properly.

  • Children taking responsibility for their devices: A young person holding a tablet, symbolizing ownership and proactive maintenance.

    Jodi

With the initiative, kids are taking more ownership of their devices. They've started thinking, "This is my device, and I need to take re sponsibility for it." The routine has also helped them stay on top of the manual updates their devices require as they always make sure to turn them off before cleaning.

We've also notice fewer damages in most classrooms.

The kids themselves have noticed less accumulated dirt on their de vices since starting the cleaning routine, and now they actually enjoy doing it.

  • Pristine Chromebooks amidst snacks, reflecting durability and care. Devices remain intact and visually appealing despite regular use.

    Keke

All our devices look really nice and intact, almost like how I got them. Even with like all the snacks we've had with our Chromebooks and everything, they still look in good condition.

My kids learned the responsibility factor of just knowing that "hey this is my Chromebook that I have to take care of because this is what I'm going to have from now (2nd grade) until 5th grade" so for many years for them to come.
